We are a documentary media production company with offices
in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Palo Alto, California.
Horse Opera was founded in 2001 by documentary filmmaker
Vanessa Warheit and historian Amy Elizabeth Robinson.
Our work is informed by a vision of a world in which
authentic freedom and security are achieved through peaceful
dialogue and cultural understanding.
Our mission is to produce high-quality media that helps to
dismantle the social and cultural myths that hamper this vision,
and that provides us with new and sustaining stories to live by.
Currently we are working on a PBS documentary film: The Insular Empire: America in the Marianas.
The Insular Empire is about the indigenous communities of
the U.S. Territory of Guam and the U.S. Commonwealth of the
Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), which together form the
Mariana Islands archipelago. These small, heavily militarized
"insular" territories, part of America's globe-straddling empire,
have long been hidden beneath the western shadow of the
American flag - and beneath the stories Americans tell
themselves about democracy. They form America's vulnerable
yet vibrant Pacific frontier.
It is time for the indigenous communities of our Pacific
frontier to tell us their story - a story of struggle and
survival. Let's listen - because American democracy is at
stake in the insular empire.
